30 people killed while walking in Marion County in 2015 A coalition working to make Indianapolis more pedestrian-friendly unveiled a new safety education campaign today in one of Marion County’s most dangerous areas for walkers. At the intersection of 34th Street and Moeller Road, WalkWays, which is a partnership of Health by Design, the City of Indianapolis and the Marion County Public Health Department, shared campaign components, including ads on IndyGo buses, yard signs and social media graphics. The Metropolitan Development Commission voted in favor of adopting Indianapolis’ first pedestrian plan as part of the county’s comprehensive plan today. “This is significant because leaders now have the framework for prioritizing resources and making decisions that will have an impact on making neighborhoods more walkable,” said Kim Irwin, director of Health by Design. The pedestrian plan is a key aspect of WalkWays, the initiative to make Indianapolis more walkable and to get more people walking. The plan is available at http://indywalkways.org/planning/. WalkWays initiative to host open houses Where should new sidewalks be built? How can we make it easier to cross the street? How can we better connect neighborhoods? As part of Indianapolis’ first pedestrian plan, the public is invited to a series of open houses to help address questions like these, cast a vision for improved walkability, and provide input on how decisions regarding the city’s walkways should be made in the future.
